Research Focus:
I am a neuroscientist involved in the study of the organization and development of the auditory system. Of particular recent interest is the examination of the physiological, structural, and behavioral effects of damage to the auditory midbrain and the effects of neural grafting in mediating possible recovery. Physiological measures include recording of auditory brainstem neural activity and monitoring spontaneous and stimulus-drive metabolic activity using immunochemical and autoradiographic procedures. Structural analyses include examination of neural immunostaining for neurotransmitters (e.g., GABA) and membrane associated proteins (e.g., calbindin). Behavioral studies include analysis of auditory response thresholds and stimulus localization in the auditory field. Developmental work focuses upon the pattern of fiber invasion to the immature midbrain and the role of afferent fiber systems in dendritic elaboration and appearance of neurochemical properties. The development of electrophysiological potentials is also studied in the auditory brainstem. I have published a state-of-the-art volume on physiological, structural, and behavioral manifestations of development of mammalian sensory systems.
