Pedigo Hired as Pharmacology Educator

Pedigo2.JPGThe Department of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience at the USC School of Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Norman “Tad” Pedigo.  Tad’s arrival in October of 2008 as a Professor of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience will support the continuation of the department’s tradition for excellence in medical pharmacology education. Tad will take over the role of Course Director for Medical Pharmacology in Spring of 2009 from Dr. Craig Davis, a nationally-recognized pharmacology educator at the SOM.

Dr. Pedigo's CV  (Word document)

Tad Pedigo also has an impressive record as a XPharmacology Educator, and by his own admission while “pharmacology is his profession, education is his calling”.  He arrives from University of Kentucky, where he served as Director of the Teaching and Academic Support Center (TASC) for the entire university, as well as an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Anesthesiology in the College of Medicine since 1988. His academic support credentials include being Co-Director of the Center for Excellence in Medical Education as well as curriculum coordinator in the Department of Molecular and Biomedical Pharmacology in the UK College of Medicine since 1998.  He holds a prestigious appointment on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Pharmacology item-writing committee, and has won the “Best of Kentucky” IT Award for IT collaborations. During his interview, it became clear that Tad’s arrival heralds the addition of some new technologies to enhance education at USC SOM.  During his service as TASC Director, he managed much of the distance learning and E-learning initiatives, as well as the Blackboard training and management systems.

Tad will assume the leadership role in biomedical pharmacology education at USC SOM, and his credentials as a teacher and prior experience in managing Medical Pharmacology courses will continue our department’s commitment to excellence in biomedical education.  Tad has won many teaching awards during his tenure at UK, including their Best Preclinical Instructor Golden Apple Award (5 times), Best Preclinical Course Golden Podium Award (4 times as director), and the Clerkship of Excellence Award.  He has been recognized for teaching excellence at the UK College of Medicine as a Five-Star Master Educator.  Tad is also very active in training graduate students, and will take an active role in training Nurse Anesthesia Graduate students here at USC.  He currently directs a unique integrated course for fourth-year medical students at University of Kentucky that has attracted national attention; this Advanced Clinical Pharmacology and Anesthesiology course integrates basic science and clinical experiential activities using patient simulators. We look forward to his added expertise in moving medical education forward into these more integrated venues at USC.  Tad is an accomplished scientist with numerous publications in Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, and Neuroscience journals, as well as scholarly contributions to Academic Medicine.  Prior to joining the University of Kentucky, Tad was assistant professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Louisiana State University from 1980 to 1985.  He earned his doctoral degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1973.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Pedigo as our newest faculty member in PPN.  We look forward to his direction and help in advancing the educational, research and service missions of the department and the School of Medicine.
