Department chair search committee namedUSC School of Medicine Dean Donald J. DiPette announced the appointment of a 9-member committee to begin the search to fill the position of Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Neuroscience. Dr. Stephen P. Wilson announced his retirement in November of 2007 and Dr. Marlene Wilson has been appointed Interim Chair of the department by Dean DiPette.
DiPette emphasized the importance of finding the right person to lead the department and "fulfill the department's teaching mission in medical and graduate education, expand and enhance the research base of the basic sciences, lead his or her own externally funded research program, and facilitate the development of translational research in the department and School of Medicine." Other members of the search committee include three faculty members from the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience, Jim Augustine PhD, Alex McDonald PhD, and Larry Reagan PhD. Also appointed to the search committee are Kim Creek PhD, Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, Greg Hand PhD, Arnold School of Public Health, Sandra Kelly PhD from the Department of Psychology, Kristi H. Williams CRNA, MN Program Director of USC/PMRH Masters of Nurse Anesthesia Program and Mike Yost PhD, Director of Research in the Department of Surgery. The following ad has been placed in a number of national publications: The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Chair of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience The University of South Carolina School of Medicine is seeking an established Ph.D., M.D., or combined M.D. Ph.D. scientist and academic leader to assume the position of Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience. Successful candidates should have expertise in at least one of the three departmental areas and be qualified for appointment at the level of Professor with tenure in the School of Medicine. The selected candidate will be expected to fulfill the department's teaching mission in medical and graduate education, expand and enhance the research base of the basic sciences, lead his or her own externally funded research program, and facilitate the development of translational research in the department and School of Medicine. Opportunities exist for collaboration with ongoing research programs on the University of South Carolina campus. The position offers a competitive salary and the resources needed to expand this outstanding department. Major areas of investigation in the department (http://ppn.med.sc.edu) include the manipulation of gene expression with viral vectors, physiological aspects of ion channel pharmacology, as well as the physiology and pharmacology underlying age-related cognitive deficits and neurodegenerative disorders. Research focus areas include chronic pain, depression, epilepsy, diabetes, stress, and anxiety. The School of Medicine, located on the campus of the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center, offers the M.D. degree, master's and doctoral degrees in biomedical science, and master's degrees in genetic counseling, rehabilitation counseling and nurse anesthesia. State-funded Research Centers of Economic Excellence are devoted to cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease, brain imaging, biomedical ethics, health services and primary health care. The School of Medicine is a key component of the university's Innovista research initiative. Since biomedical and health sciences are among the university's core research areas, substantial space in Innovista's Discovery Plaza, a new 125,000 square foot biomedical research building, could be made available to the department.
